Why is Snapchat so popular? I have a theory. I’ll admit, it’s a little strange, but hear me out.
Snapchat isn’t as popular as Facebook with its 1.7 billion active users. But to be fair, it has 150 million very, very, engaged users. Which generate 10 billion daily views. The company has also forecasted an impressive $935 million in advertising revenue for 2017. How does an app based on disappearing pictures get to a $30 billion evaluation?
I believe it comes down to our biological fascination with mortality. Like I said, a little out there, but I’m convinced it’s fact. Think about it. Human life and snaps have one important truth in common, they are both fading, and will both eventually disappear.
Spoiler alert: from the second we are born we are dying. From the second a snap is sent out into the world its time on this planet slowly fades away. Unless of course you screen shot it, but let’s be honest, that’s just creepy.
Snapchat, whether they know it or not, has tapped into the one thing that makes life so special: it’s short-lived. In the words of the Flaming Lips “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?” and so will your Snapchat videos, stories, and news.
In a world where we’ve been encouraged to save our life moments in the form of photos and videos on Facebook and Instagram, Snapchat breaks convention by mimicking our human nature. It subconsciously reminds us of what it feels like to be human. Even with great distance between our friends, family, and idols, Snapchat has the power to bring us together.
In the words of George Clooney’s character from Up in The Air “Photos are for people who can't remember.” Snapchat is for people who share photos for people to remember, and nothing else.
Final thought: In life all we have is time. We can’t save it, we can’t share it, all we can do is spend it. So go ahead and spend it sharing Snaps but don’t forget to put the phone down every once in a while and spend your time with the ones you love.
